Middlesex student nurses promote wellbeing and mindfulness among hospital staff
11 May 2026
The event marks International Nurses’ Day and includes blood pressure checks
Student nurses from Middlesex University will be encouraging wellbeing among staff at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital (RNOH) this week. The special event at the hospital in Stanmore, North London, will be held on Tuesday May 12 to mark International Nurses’ Day.
Between midday and 2pm in the atrium, two adult nursing students, two mental health nursing students and one child nursing student from Middlesex will be working alongside the RNOH education team and staff to promote wellbeing to on-duty hospital staff.
Activities will be themed around areas of wellbeing such as promoting mindfulness and mental health activities, the benefits of healthy eating and drinking, including ensuring staff are drinking enough water on shifts, promoting physical activity and the specific advantages of fitness activities in nature such as park runs. Staff will also be able to get blood pressure checks on the day.
One student Ololade Olaofe, a third year BSc Mental Health Nursing student at Middlesex who has been on placement with the North London NHS Foundation trust, will be promoting mindfulness on the day and encouraging staff to make use of a mental health app called Unmind, which is free for NHS staff.
“Nurses work around the clock, so we need to take a break and slow down every so often - those breaks are so important. I want to encourage nurses to take a breath in the middle of the shift to help us relax our mind. We need to look after ourselves as we look after our patients.”

Student Rugiatu Rogers, a third year BSc Adult Nursing student at Middlesex who is currently on her final placement at the RNOH, will be speaking to staff about the benefits of walking.
She said: “A lot of people don’t walk around as much now, so I will be promoting the benefits of walking on your wellbeing and health. Just walking for 25 minutes a day can be beneficial.”
Pam Hodge, Senior Lecturer in Practice Based Learning at Middlesex University, said: “We were delighted to work in collaboration with the RNOH Education Team to offer nurses staff wellbeing on Nurses Day. "This event is a great example of the continued partnership working between »ÆÍø±¬ÁÏ and RNOH.
“For the five finalist students (adult, child and mental health fields) it has been an amazing opportunity to engage in the development of activities and planning with the RNOH education team; support their professional development and leadership skills; and action real world public health using the Making Every Contact Count initiative. What better way to celebrate nurses’ day than by offering staff wellbeing, undertaken with the nurses of the future, making sure that we are caring for the nurses of today.”
Deirdre Coll, Lead Nurse for Education at the RNOH, said: “As we celebrate International Nurses Day, we are delighted to welcome Nursing Students from Middlesex University who will be supporting our wellbeing event. Students from the Adult, Mental Health, and Child nursing branches will be joining us, working alongside our clinical educators to promote staff wellbeing. This new initiative is designed to help students develop and strengthen their skills in signposting colleagues to health education, including areas such as mindfulness, healthy eating, and physical activity such as walking and running.
“RNOH is proud to collaborate with Middlesex University on this project. It represents another example of our innovative partnership working with our university colleagues.”
