About your course

This degree develops you into a confident, creative and reflective music educator through a structured progression from foundational musicianship and creative practice to advanced teaching experience, and professional experience. You’ll develop your critical thinking and explore different approaches to teaching music, while refining your skills in your specialist instrument(s), songwriting or composition. You’ll also gain an understanding of the music industry and, in your final year, have the opportunity to gain valuable work experience through a music industry placement.

Build the foundations of your creative practice by understanding how music and sound are created, structured and experienced. You'll strengthen your musicianship through music theory, notation, aural training and acoustics, giving you the confidence to compose, perform, produce and collaborate throughout your degree.

Gain hands-on experience using professional recording equipment, studio environments and production techniques. You'll learn how to record, edit and produce high-quality audio while building the practical skills and confidence needed to work in professional music and sound production settings.

Start developing your creative identity through performance, composition, songwriting and production. You'll write, rehearse, record and perform original music while building musicianship, creative confidence and the collaborative skills needed to succeed in today's music industry.

Understand how today's music industry operates across live events, recording, streaming, publishing and music for film, animation and games. You'll examine how AI and emerging technologies are reshaping creative careers while developing commercial awareness to navigate a rapidly evolving industry.

Learn how music and sound bring stories to life across film, television, animation and digital media. You'll create original soundtracks and sound design for screen-based projects while developing the creative and technical skills to build a professional portfolio.

Take your creative practice further by refining your skills in performance, songwriting, composition and production. Through experimentation, rehearsal, recording and live presentation, you'll create original work that showcases your artistic voice and prepares you for professional creative practice.

Learn how money flows through the music industry, from copyright and contracts to royalties, streaming income and funding. You'll gain the commercial knowledge to protect your work, maximise opportunities and build a sustainable career in creative industries.

Teaching

You'll study in a collaborative learning environment that reflects the realities of today's music industry, combining academic insight with professional practice. Teaching is delivered by experienced academics and industry practitioners who bring current knowledge and real-world expertise into the classroom.

You'll typically attend a combination of lectures, seminars, workshops and tutorials each week, alongside dedicated time for independent study, creative practice and project work. Learning combines theoretical study with practical application, giving you the opportunity to explore music, sound and the creative industries in a range of contexts.

Whether you study full-time or part-time, your timetable is designed to balance on-campus learning with independent study, creative practice, and other commitments.

Our excellent teaching and support teams will help you develop the skills relevant to your degree from research and practical skills to critical thinking. And we offer free 24-hour laptop loans with full desktop software, free printing and Wi-Fi to use on or off campus, even over the weekend.

This course is assessed through coursework, enabling you to demonstrate your knowledge, creativity and practical skills across a range of musical and professional contexts.

Throughout the course, you'll receive regular formative feedback through tutorials, workshops, presentations, performances, and project reviews, helping you refine your work as it progresses. Every assessment is accompanied by detailed feedback, supporting your academic development, creative practice, and preparation for employment or further study.

English language

You will need to meet our English language requirements. Don’t worry if you don't meet our minimum English language requirements, as we offer a Pre-sessional English course.

Interviews and auditions

Entry onto this course requires an online or face-to-face interview.

The interview will start with a group welcome talk followed by one-to-one interviews. Details of your subject-specific interview will be emailed to you.

Your audition is a chance to show us what stage you're at in your musical development. You'll be asked to perform on your first-study instrument or voice. Choose a short (three minutes maximum) piece you've learned in advance and are comfortable performing.

You will be expected to be familiar with standard musical notation, and basic music theory and harmony. As a rough guide, you should aim to be at the Associated Board (ABRSM) Grade 5 level or similar.

We'll also invite you to talk briefly about a musical topic of your choice and ask about your musical interests and aspirations.

If you are an international student, you can submit a showreel instead. A showreel is a collection of your creative work that introduces you as an artist.

Portfolio

We'll ask to see your portfolio so we can get to know your creative style, ideas and potential. A portfolio is a collection of your creative work that introduces you as an artist.

After you have applied, we will send you a link for you to submit your portfolio online via the applicant portal.

We welcome portfolios in any digital format. Please share your work in whatever way best represents your creativity and skills.

The fees below are for the 2027/28 academic year:

Changes to tuition fees from the 2027-2028 academic year for UK undergraduate students

UK Government information on tuition fees for UK undergraduate students in the 2027/2028 academic year

If your course starts on or after 1 January 2027 and you're eligible, you may need to apply for funding through the Lifelong Learning Entitlement (LLE). Applications open in September 2026. This funding will also be available for eligible modules.

The changes below will apply from 1 August 2027. The government intends to lay regulations implementing these changes in early 2026 and will be subject to Parliamentary procedure. Further information can be found at .

For the 2027/28 academic year, it is anticipated that the maximum annual tuition fee applicable to UK undergraduate students for approved providers will increase to:

£10,050 for standard full-time courses
£12,060 for full-time accelerated courses
£7,530 for part-time courses.

This means that if you start your studies in September 2026 on a standard full-time course, you will pay an annual tuition fee of £9,790 for your first year which will then rise to £10,050 for your second year of study starting in September 2027.

Subsequent tuition fee rises for UK undergraduate students

Depending on the duration of your study, your tuition fees for subsequent academic years beyond the 2027/28 academic year may therefore be subject to further inflationary increases by the UK government in due course. This means that the fee set out above is likely to be increased again for the 2028/29 academic year.

Any annual increase in tuition fees as provided for above will be notified to students directly in writing at the earliest opportunity in advance of the academic year to which the rise may apply.
