Course overview

Gain the skills, knowledge, and frameworks to support sustainable and inclusive urban change. This course is particularly relevant if you are interested in urban design, planning, policy, development, or management. It is also suitable for people working in local government, housing associations, community engagement, sustainability, public health, environmentalism, or place-making.

Experienced lecturers and expert practitioners from London Development Trust (LDT) teach the course. LDT is an award-winning charitable NGO that specialises in social sustainability. Teaching draws on in community development, social sustainability, and management. This experience supports a case-study-based approach.

You will learn through site visits, workshops, mock development briefs, funding applications, and interactive lectures. The course will help you understand and reconcile real-world complexities. These include managing stakeholders and addressing funding challenges while integrating social and environmental policy aims.

About your course

On completion of this module, you will be able to: 

• Demonstrate in-depth understanding of sustainable urban development and its key contemporary challenges through engaging with critical urban theory  
• Critically analyse approaches to social sustainability within sites of urban development and regeneration, and the relationship these have with local and national policy and governance.  
• Provide a critical outline of the key pillars of community development, including the ways in which they interconnect with one another and their different impacts for residents and for voluntary, statutory and corporate domains
• Identify and apply the principles of sustainable development in a range of contexts to address urban development challenges and draw on real world case studies 
• Outline and propose suitable community development instruments, approaches, and programmes for a range of urban contexts.  
• Effectively design a community project addressing a social sustainability issue in an urban development setting and present it through a large-scale funding application – evaluating and justifying the principles, standards and instruments as well as implementation strategy for action through engagement with literature and secondary research data 

Learning and teaching

Experienced lecturers and expert practitioners teach this module. They use varied teaching methods and innovative resources to help you develop skills and competencies in sustainable urban development and community development.

The module consists of weekly, two-hour interactive sessions, including site visits, workshops, and seminars. Online materials support the taught content. They cover key concepts, frameworks, and case studies drawn from wider literature, the tutors’ practical experience, and their research. These resources will help you develop a broad understanding of social sustainability and management.

Teaching uses a range of strategies to help you apply concepts and principles to real-life social sustainability issues and policy problems. You will work constructively in a team to identify and reconcile different stakeholder agendas and interests in social and environmental policy.

Assessment

The course is assessed entirely through coursework and has no examinations.

The formative assessment includes:  

• A 1,500-word referenced essay based on critical urban theory. You will explain how socially sustainable urban or community development could address a key urban challenge of your choice. This is due in week 6
• An outline of a large-scale funding bid. You will integrate the five keystones into the bid and apply them to one urban redevelopment site. This is due in week 10.

For the summative assessment, you will produce a 1,500-word funding application. It will set out the principles, standards, instruments, and implementation strategy for action on a specific social sustainability issue in a defined context.

You will also produce a 1,000-word critical academic narrative. This will position the application within relevant urban theory.
