Our Board plays an important non-executive role in the success of the University. Our Governors are dedicated to the development of our staff, the learning of our students and the growth of the University as a whole. They are an essential part of our One Middlesex family.

Meet our Governors

Our Governors have made notable contributions to business, academia, and public life. They bring professional expertise, specialist knowledge, and management experience to the University.

Board members provide an independent perspective and hold the University Executive Team to account. They volunteer their time and expertise to support Middlesex University.

Matt Lewis

Chair of the Board of Governors

Matt Lewis began his career in banking before qualifying as a chartered accountant.

He worked for KPMG for 30 years, including 20 years as a partner. During this time, he advised major international organisations across several sectors and regions. His work covered audits and significant transactions, including mergers, acquisitions, and the launch of new businesses.

Matt joined the Middlesex University Board in 2017 and became Chair in 2026. He previously served as Deputy Chair and chaired the Audit, Assurance and Risk Committee and the Remuneration Committee.

Mostaque Ahmed

Mostaque Ahmed is Chief Financial Officer and Director for Corporate Services at the London Fire Brigade.

He oversees six departments:

  • Finance
  • General Counsel
  • Procurement and Commercial
  • ICT and Digital
  • Property and Fleet
  • Performance Improvement.

Mostaque began his career in the private sector with Ernst & Young and the Royal Bank of Scotland before joining the Civil Service.

During his time in Whitehall, he worked across several government departments, including:

  • HM Treasury
  • Cabinet Office
  • Department for Transport
  • Home Office.

Mostaque was Managing Director of Finance, Portfolio and Performance for the House of Commons. He also served as Finance Director at the House of Lords.

For eight years, until July 2025, he chaired the Governing Board of a primary school in Brent.

Simon Darling

Simon Darling is Managing Director of the growth agency Jack & Anna.

The agency works with multinational companies and start-ups in:

  • fast-moving consumer goods
  • telecommunications
  • financial services
  • retail
  • healthcare.

Its clients operate in turnaround and high-growth situations across listed company and private equity environments.

Simon began his career in Finance at Unilever. He later became Marketing Director at eBay, Vice-President of Marketing at Skype, and Chief Commercial Officer at Trainline.

He has founded two start-ups. One of these, Fonepark, was acquired by an AOL-backed company.

Simon holds a first-class degree in Economics from the University of Cambridge. He is also a prize winner and Passed Finalist with the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA).

Professor Mandeep K Dhami

Professor Mandeep K Dhami is based in the Department of Psychology at Middlesex University.

She has held academic and research positions at:

  • the University of Cambridge
  • the University of Surrey
  • the University of Victoria
  • the University of Maryland
  • the Max Planck Institute for Human Development.

She has also held visiting positions in Spain and Australia.

Mandeep previously worked as a Principal Scientist for the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory at the UK Ministry of Defence. She also has experience of working in British prisons.

She is an internationally recognised expert in:

  • human judgement and decision-making
  • risk perception
  • the communication of uncertainty.

Mandeep has written more than 145 scholarly publications. She is lead editor of Judgment and Decision Making as a Skill.

Her research has received awards from organisations including:

  • the European Association for Decision Making
  • the American Psychological Association, Division 9
  • the NATO Science & Technology Organisation.

Mandeep is a Fellow of the Psychonomic Society and the Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues. She regularly advises national and international government bodies on evidence-based policy and practice in criminal justice, defence, and security.

She previously chaired the Ethical Standards Committee for Cambridgeshire Police Authority. She also served on the executive board of the Restorative Justice City of Victoria Program in British Columbia, Canada.

Mandeep is currently:

  • Editor of Judgment and Decision Making
  • the UK representative on a NATO research panel
  • President of the European Association for Decision Making.

Her hobbies include competitive ballroom and Latin dancing.

Jonathan Elgott

Jonathan Elgott is Global Chief Financial Officer for Technology and Operations at Marsh McLennan. The financial and professional services organisation employs more than 90,000 people across four major businesses:

  • Marsh
  • Mercer
  • Guy Carpenter
  • Oliver Wyman.

At Middlesex University, Jonathan is a member of the Finance and Infrastructure Committee.

He trained as a chartered accountant with EY. After joining as a graduate, he worked in corporate finance and advised organisations on:

  • mergers and acquisitions
  • funding
  • transformation programmes.

His work covered the public sector, financial services, and other corporate industries.

After leaving EY as a Director, Jonathan held senior finance positions at HSBC, Capita, and Tate & Lyle.

Dr David Gilani

Dr David Gilani is Head of Access and Participation at Middlesex University. He leads the University’s use of evaluation, interventions, and reporting to support equitable outcomes for all student groups.

David began his career as a Students’ Union officer and strongly supports student voice. In 2012, he founded the Student Publication Association, which supports student journalists across the UK and Ireland.

He promotes collaboration between universities to strengthen student engagement. David is a former Chair of the CASE Student Communications Conference. He also co-edited the Perspectives journal special issue, "Student Communications in Higher Education".

David is a Fellow of the Association of Higher Education Professionals. He was a finalist for its Higher Education Professional of the Year Award in 2024 for his leadership of the Student Experience and Engagement Network.

He holds a PhD from the University of York on student belonging. He regularly publishes and presents research in this area.

Dr Nabeel Goheer

Dr Nabeel Goheer is PATH’s Chief of the Asia, Middle East and Europe Region.

He provides strategic leadership and oversees programme activities across regional hubs in:

  • South Asia
  • South East Asia
  • Eastern Europe
  • Central Asia
  • China
  • Western Europe.

He also oversees other PATH projects across the region. Nabeel develops and implements strategies to expand the organisation’s portfolio into the Middle East and additional countries in Asia.

He has almost 25 years of professional experience. Before joining PATH, he spent 10 years supporting and representing the Commonwealth Secretary-General.

His work at the Commonwealth covered:

  • strategy
  • governance
  • partnerships
  • portfolio management
  • evaluation
  • technology
  • innovation
  • digitalisation.

Nabeel previously worked with the International Labour Organization at the United Nations, the World Bank, the United Nations Development Programme, USAID, and the Government of Pakistan.

He holds:

  • a BSc in Electrical Engineering from the University of Engineering and Technology in Lahore, Pakistan
  • an MA in International Development from the International University of Japan
  • an MPhil in Technology Policy from the University of Cambridge and Massachusetts Institute of Technology
  • a PhD in Management from the University of Cambridge
  • a Certificate in Macroeconomic Policy and Management from Harvard.

Laura Guittard

Laura Guittard is Vice-President of Global Finance Risk Management and Controls and ESG Reporting at GSK.

She oversees the enterprise risk area "Finance Controls & Reporting" on behalf of the Chief Financial Officer.

Laura holds a BA in Business Administration from the University of Strathclyde. After qualifying as a Chartered Accountant of Scotland, she moved to Paris with KPMG.

She later joined Kraft Foods, now Mondelez, where she held roles of increasing responsibility. She has lived and worked in five countries across three continents.

Laura strongly supports meritocracy. At GSK, she participates in or chairs voluntary groups and mentors women and people starting their careers.

She is also a Director of several GSK subsidiaries.

Helen Kelisky

Helen Kelisky has more than 30 years of leadership experience in the technology sector. She has led national and international businesses and delivered substantial growth.

Her previous roles include:

  • Managing Director of Google Cloud in the UK and Ireland
  • Senior Vice-President of Cloud at Salesforce UK and Ireland
  • Vice-President of Cloud at IBM.

Helen was recognised as one of the 100 Most Influential Women in UK Tech for nine consecutive years, from 2017 to 2025.

She currently serves on the Board of Calnex Solutions PLC, an Alternative Investment Market-listed company. She also sits on the Board of Women in Telecommunications and Technology, a non-profit networking group that supports education and women’s careers.

Middlesex University is her alma mater.

Rebecca Lawrence

Rebecca Lawrence has extensive experience of leadership across the public sector.

She is a Commissioner at the National Preparedness Commission. Until November 2025, she was Chief Executive of the British Library.

From 2019 to 2023, Rebecca was Chief Executive of the Crown Prosecution Service. She introduced large-scale innovation to improve performance and support digital transformation.

Before leading the Crown Prosecution Service, she was the founding Chief Executive of the Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime. She served as:

  • Director of Strategy and Resourcing from 2013 to 2016
  • Chief Executive from 2016 to 2019.

In these roles, she became a recognised national leader in police technology and digital security innovation.

Rebecca began her career in Whitehall as a senior civil servant at HM Treasury. She later moved to the Home Office and policing, where she led work on counter-terrorism strategy, resourcing, and transformation.

Dame Jil Matheson

Dame Jil Matheson was National Statistician, Head of the Government Statistical Service, and Chief Executive of the UK Statistics Authority from 2009 to 2014.

Before these appointments, she built a career in social research and statistics.

Jil also chaired:

  • the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development Committee on Statistics and Statistical Policy
  • the United Nations Statistical Commission.

She currently serves on several committees, including the UK Committee on Research Integrity. She is also a Non-Executive Director of the Sports Ground Safety Authority.

Throughout her career, Jil has promoted research and statistics for the public good. Her work helps citizens and decision-makers understand their communities, countries, and the wider world.

She was appointed Dame Commander of the Order of the Bath in 2014 for services to official statistics.

Oluwafeyisayo Temiloluwa "Temi" Osinubi

Oluwafeyisayo, known as Temi, is a Nigerian international student studying BSc Computer Science at Middlesex University.

He brings a strong commitment to representation, community building, and academic empowerment to his role as a Student Governor.

Temi has been actively involved in student life and advocacy. He served as Events Organiser for the POC Liberation Group, where he helped:

  • create inclusive spaces
  • organise community-led events
  • amplify the voices of students of colour across the University.

His work focused on building belonging, celebrating culture, and ensuring that students felt seen and supported.

Temi was elected Education Officer for 2026-27. His campaign focused on creating a strong networking system that helps students connect with opportunities, peers, and support.

He also pledged to hold the University accountable for its commitments, promoting transparency, effective follow-through, and student-centred decision-making.

As an international student in UK higher education, Temi is committed to:

  • strengthening academic support
  • improving communication between students and Faculty staff
  • promoting equitable learning experiences.

He combines his technical background, organisational skills, and collaborative approach to help every Middlesex student thrive inside and outside the classroom.

Mihita Parekh

Mihita Parekh is Students’ Union President for 2026-27 and a 2026 BA (Hons) Business Management (Finance) graduate.

As an international student, she has taken an active role in student leadership and has promoted representation, inclusion, and positive institutional change.

Before becoming Students’ Union President, Mihita served as:

  • Education Officer in 2024-25
  • Student Voice Leader
  • President of Women’s Liberation.

She has represented students across University governance. She also represented Middlesex students at the UK Parliament, contributing to an All-Party Parliamentary Group panel on the Renters’ Rights Bill.

Mihita has led campaigns concerning student wellbeing, affordability, and the academic experience. She has worked with senior University leaders to ensure that student feedback informs institutional decisions.

She was elected on a commitment to represent the interests of every student. Her priorities include:

  • improving student wellbeing
  • strengthening academic and personal support
  • promoting an inclusive and welcoming community
  • ensuring that students feel heard, valued, and empowered.

Andrea Rigamonti

Andrea Rigamonti has more than 20 years of financial leadership experience in listed and international businesses. His previous employers include Videndum plc, Senior plc, and Sony UK.

He currently serves on:

  • the Board and Finance Committee of Ofqual
  • the Audit and Risk Assurance Committee of the Fair Work Agency.

Andrea also provides Interim CFO services to SAS International through Keystone Business Consulting.

He has expertise in strategy, risk governance, and financial stewardship. He has supported Audit Committees since 2010.

Andrea began his career in investment banking at Morgan Stanley.

He is a Chartered Management Accountant and holds an MEng in Engineering, Economics and Management from the University of Oxford.

At Middlesex University, Andrea serves on the Audit, Assurance and Risk Committee.

Mark Simpson

Mark Simpson is Director of eDiscovery for Europe, the Middle East and Africa at OpenText, an information management technology company.

He began his career as a barrister and solicitor in Perth, Western Australia, before moving to London in 1997.

Mark led the development of technology, information, and consultancy solutions at global companies including LexisNexis and Thomson Reuters.

His products for the legal and life sciences sectors received recognition through:

  • the UK Legal Technology Awards
  • the Queen’s Award for Excellence in the Innovation category.

During the past decade, Mark has specialised in eDiscovery and forensic technology. He oversaw operations and global investigation services at Epiq Systems and Deloitte.

He has worked on major cross-border litigation, regulatory investigations, and high-profile UK public inquiries.

Alongside his legal qualifications, Mark holds:

  • CIPP/E certification
  • CIPM certification
  • an MA in the History and Philosophy of Science and Medicine from Birkbeck College.

Mark mentors leaders of small technology companies. He is also a mentor for SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity.

Frances Wadsworth CBE

Frances Wadsworth has worked in education for more than 40 years.

She began her career as a teacher in UK schools before moving into further education. She later became Principal and Chief Executive, leading the turnaround of two further education colleges.

Her experience also includes working for the British Council at the British Embassy in Washington, DC.

Frances has held several ministerial appointments, including:

  • Chair of Ofqual
  • England’s Further Education Commissioner
  • member of the Construction Industry Training Board.

She currently serves on the Board of Ofsted.

Frances has worked with the Further Education Commissioner for more than seven years. She provides leadership and governance support to further education colleges across England.

She has served as a governor and board member in schools, further education, and higher education. She has also been a trustee of several charities.

Frances currently serves as a Family Magistrate. She was appointed CBE in 2022.

Professor Shân Wareing

Professor Shân Wareing is the University’s Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive Officer.

She is a member of the Board of Universities UK and the Office of the Independent Adjudicator for Higher Education in England and Wales.

Her previous external roles include:

  • Chair of the Unite Foundation
  • Chair of Advance HE’s Leadership and Management Strategic Advisory Group.

Shân has spoken and published on:

  • digital and financial transformation
  • learning and teaching in higher education
  • linguistics
  • equality, diversity, and inclusion
  • leadership and team development.

She studied English Literature and Language at the University of Oxford and Sociolinguistics at the University of Strathclyde.

Shân was a competitive rower for 20 years and holds a rowing half-blue from the University of Oxford.

She also holds a postgraduate diploma in Higher Education Studies from the Institute of Education at University College London.

Shân is:

  • a Professor of Teaching in Higher Education
  • a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy
  • a National Teaching Fellow.

Her first academic role was Lecturer in English Language and Linguistics at the University of Roehampton. She later moved into educational development and served as Co-Chair of the Staff and Educational Development Association.

Her executive roles have included:

  • Deputy Vice-Chancellor at the University of Northampton
  • Chief Operating Officer at London South Bank University
  • Pro Vice-Chancellor Learning and Teaching at Buckinghamshire New University.

Shân has led several successful institutional change programmes. These include:

  • the award-winning digital transformation of the student journey at London South Bank University
  • recruitment improvements at the University of Northampton
  • assessment reform at University of the Arts London.

The assessment reform produced a 12% improvement in National Student Survey questions about assessment and feedback. This improvement was sustained for 10 years.
